The Evolutionary Developments, Threats and Opportunities Within the Nigerian Healthcare System

From time immemorial, traditional medicine has been the only source of health care in Africa. Western-style health care was first imported into Nigeria by the Portuguese navigators who arrived on West Africa’s coast in 1472. The strong influence of regional politics on socioeconomic development leads to health policy inconsistency. Each successive administration is distinguished by the “interest” policies they espoused, which are often not aligned with the past national health plans. Although the Western-style health system in Nigeria continues to evolve, the history and developments within the system remain obscure to the rest of the world. This chapter describes the critical milestones in developing the Western-style health system in Nigeria from 1472 to the contemporary era, including why universal health care has been elusive for over 60 years. The chapter also identifies the present and future threats and opportunities within the health system and compared the Nigerian health system’s performance with other African countries.
